Here’s the scoop.

Earlier today, I came across a post from the blog “Extra Life” titled Gamer Confessions Tag, where the host Red Metal talked about some personal stuff. I like personal stuff, and occasionally like talking about myself too.

So I figured that I’d chime in.

From what I understand, there are a number of questions to answer, and I’d like to invite you all to participate if you dare. Additionally, take some time to peek at TooTall4UFool’s and A Geek Girl’s Guide’s posts (who just may be the originator of the whole deal).

A game everyone loves, but I can’t stand

UNDERTALE Game Over

I can only take so many insults

I knew I needed to like Undertale, because I can’t get anywhere on the internet without hearing people gush about it. I totally understand why people love it, but I just don’t get it.

And I don’t know why.

I know it’s a good game, but it’s such a chore to play. I desperately wanted to finish the game, but I made the mistake early on of not buying something from one of the characters, only to face her later in combat. Instead of me progressing beyond her encounter, I got stuck. That isn’t to say that I liked it up until that point though. I had to actively force myself to keep playing to get even that far.

Perhaps I’ll revisit Undertale some day, but I’m going to hold off for a long while.

A game that I love, but no one else seems to

Far Cry 2 G3.jpg

This brings back memories

2008 was such a huge year in gaming. Grand Theft AutoFallout, and Fable finally came to the Xbox 360 and PS3, and I knew that I needed to find a way to afford them all. In the end, I gave up on buying Fable II in favor of buying GTA IVFallout 3, and Far Cry 2. I had been on the fence about the latter, but I’m glad I relented in the end.

I loved Far Cry 2, and hoped that the series would continue along the same vein, but Ubisoft seemed intent on turning the franchise into another game like Assassin’s Creed would eventually become; a series of soulless open worlds (I have not played Assassin’s Creed Origins yet).

Far Cry 2 stole me away because it featured an interesting plot that pitted you against both sides of a conflict which were being fed arms from the same weapons dealer. You choose your mercenary and go to work, except you’re at the mercy of a malaria infection as well, meaning you need the help of the locals to stay alive. Your weapons break, scavenged ones are crap, and you can’t just throw money at your problems.

It isn’t a perfect game, but I loved it nonetheless.

An older game I haven’t finished, and probably never will

I don’t even have a single game to list here. There are too many to count. A few of note would be games from the Resident Evil series on PS1 I suppose, because they scared the crap out of me.

My guilty pleasure game

GTA V Bird Kill.png

Yes, I hit a bird with my car

My guilty pleasure game? I guess that’d translate as a game I will always return to for some good, stupid fun. Something I’d be hesitant to admit that I like. Honestly, I’d have to go with Grand Theft Auto V.

I don’t know what it is, but for some reason I really enjoy just running around and wreaking havoc. Not in the multiplayer, because I think it’s a mindless slog, but the single player. Even to this day, I’d really love to buy a copy for the PC and play around with mods, but I don’t want to spend the money on a game that refuses to drop in price and has such a horrifically predatory microtransaction economy.

A game I really love but haven’t played in a long time

Red Faction, the original. It was one of my first experiences with the type of first-person shooter that we know and love today. It took me a very long time to get used to the twin analog stick controls, but once I did, I fell in love. It helped that it featured a terrain modification engine that is honestly still unrivaled to this day, and didn’t survive in quite the same form for the rest of the franchise.

Now that I know I can get it on the PS4, and it’s still available on PC, I might need to remedy not revisiting this game.

A game I never play seriously but others do

Forza Horizon 3 Cruising Australia

Sometimes it’s nice to just cruise around

This could honestly describe any game for me that hosts a competitive element. If I were to pick a specific game though, it’d have to be ones from the Forza franchise. I love the racing on my own against the computer, but I have no interest at all in competing against other players. I know how aggressive of a racer I am, and I don’t want to subject others to it… Aside from my Drivatar.

A game I completed but hated it by the end

I learn to hate games pretty early on in my time with them. If I truly hate a game, I quit playing it.

A game I thought I’d enjoy, but didn’t

Easy… Mass Effect Andromeda. Or No Man’s Sky. Or both?

Yeah, both.

A game I didn’t think was for me, and then loved

NieR:Automata_20180110211147

Alien Head Fighting Game XIII is amazing

Seriously though, I do love NieR: Automata, and I honestly didn’t think I’d enjoy it. I would gush more about it here, but I’d rather take the opportunity to do some shameless self-promotion!

A game I’m still excited for that hasn’t come out yet

Super Smash Brothers Switch

One could say I have a… burning desire for this title

SUPER SMASH BROTHERS FOR THE SWITCH!

Now It’s Your Turn!

So take this opportunity! Let’s talk about games. Or more accurately, let’s talk about the games I listed because this is about me. If you want to do this yourself, you have the option though, I guess…

Here’s the list to use for a prompt:

  • A game everyone loves that you can’t stand
  • A game that you love, but no one else seems to
  • An older game you haven’t finished, and probably never will
  • A guilty pleasure game
  • A game you really love but haven’t played in a long time
  • A game you never play seriously but others do
  • A game you completed but hated it by the end
  • A game you thought you’d enjoy, but didn’t
  • A game you didn’t think was for you, and then loved
  • A game you are still excited for that hasn’t come out yet

I'm just a gamer that enjoys talking about my hobbies. I do a little more than that too. I love cooking, grilling, being outdoors, going target shooting, etc.

  1. I’m glad you liked my post enough to link to it! You came up with some pretty interesting answers yourself.

I kind of agree that I tend to know where I will ultimately stand when I complete a game; it was obvious five minutes in that there was no way Ride to Hell: Retribution was going to redeem itself and get a passing grade. However, there were a few exceptions (i.e. System Shock 2 and The Last of Us) that were great/passable only to go into a total nosedive at the last second. It was what led me to develop that rule wherein lousy endings result in a disqualification.

    1. I haven’t worked through System Shock 2 yet, but I remember the end of The Last of Us being a little meh. I remember feeling similar about Deus Ex Mankind Divided’s ending. I can’t say it ruined the game for me, but it was wonderfully disappointing.

      1. Yeah, The Last of Us didn’t seem to know what to do for the ending; it just kind of fizzles out without giving any kind of satisfying closure for the characters’ arcs. A lot of critics called it brave, but I consider it lazy.

I’ve heard mixed things about Mankind Divided, though the general consensus seems to indicate it’s a step down from Human Revolution.

  2. I’m glad to find someone else who just didn’t click with Undertale. I tried, I really did.

  3. I’m very much with you on Far Cry 2. It’s quite under-rated in the franchise but has a lot to like. The enemies that respawn roughly 11 seconds after you kill them are annoying, and the malaria thing irritated me, but the way your buddies would turn up and save you (and could permanently die!) was fantastic.

      1. It was definitely excellent during the time it came out but in my opinion nothing beats GTA V.

        1. I can understand that. I just wish Rockstar didn’t leave the single player stuff behind.

            1. I don’t know. I know that it’s going to be a big game, but I can’t help shake the feeling that it’s going to be more GTA Online and less RDR.

  5. I feel the same way about Okami that you do Undertale. It has SUCH high praise, but when I attempted to watch it…I just couldn’t get into it. I didn’t find the art style that interesting, even though I know I was supposed to, and I disliked the “voices” used for the characters. I really thought I’d like it because you play as a beautiful white wolf and you can paint things in the world, but just didn’t do much for me. Obviously, if you or anyone else likes it, I don’t think any less of you; that’s just silly lol. I can see the value in the game, but I think it just isn’t for me.
